Memorial Day Thoughts by Janet Lynas, Ph.D., N.H.D.

I don’t say much on political issues, but today in light of the Memorial Day celebration I’m prompted to make a statement. I read a lot of comments on FB about other people being offended by our patriotism and our countries beliefs and our monuments that we hold dear.

I read a lot about being politically correct and cowering down so that someone doesn’t get their feelings hurt. I read about how other cultures want to change what American stands for.

But what are we standing for? Mostly all I see are Americans complaining, “If you don’t like our beliefs, then leave.” It’s all talk.

Yesterday the last Code Talker died. This brave young man, a brave in the truest sense of the word, joined the military to help defend our country. He did this despite how his people were treated by our government. I finished a book last night telling the story about how an estimated 605 Osage were murdered in the early 1920s for their mineral rights. Yet, these young men joined the war to fight for our country.

Again, I ask you? What are you standing up for when other cultures complain about our beliefs? Posting protest on FB is nothing more than words. What actions are you taking? What do you intend to do other than provide lip service to support our men and women in the military and in law enforcement?

We have elections coming up. Are you going to make known your outrage at how our government has caved in to people who are not citizens? Have you made your voice heard to government officials? Unless, you take action on your words, your words have no real meaning.

So, what are you going to do? Are you going to stand up for your country and support our military and law enforcement? Or are you just providing lip service and noise to the rhetoric?

Wednesday is the true Memorial Day. What will you be remembered for?

I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes Part 8 by Janet Lynas, Ph.D., N.H.D.

Dreams do come true.  How do you manifest your dreams?

Penelope tells Odysseus a tale of two gates that bring forth dreams to reality upon his return from 10 years of wandering.  The first gate is made of horn and the second gate is made of ivory.

The gate of ivory is carved and made by man, shaped and twisted by wish-thinking, prejudices and half-formed opinions, and is worthless.  These dreams fall to the ground.

The gate made of horn is made by God.  This gate requires only a little polishing  to make it seen in all its native power and beauty – that dream always come true.  Page 43

What is your dream?  Have you dreamed of taking Jesus at His word and placing all your heart’s desires in His hands?  Have you let Him bring your dream into reality in Divine timing and in Divine way?  Do you keep a journal of your Soul’s Sincere Desire?  Do you know that a soul’s sincere desire is always fulfilled?

I agree with Glenn Clark when he says, “I believe that our sincere desires are place in our hearts, are molded and fashioned there by the hand of God.”  These dreams are indicators of what we think in the deep recesses of our subconscious mind.  Every desire within our heart that is mature, sincere, complete, and which acknowledges God, is always a good desire.

Does your desire come from a personality integrated with both God and mankind? Is it a soul’s sincere desire?

Every desire that meets the two requirements above is always answered in heaven once converted into a prayer.  Every person whose dream comes true was first of all an unrepressed individual.  This individual knows and is unafraid to know what their honest, sincere desires in life are.  When we honestly know a thing to be true and when we hold true to this knowledge, it comes to pass.

“Know yourself.”  How many of us truly know ourselves?  How many of us are honest with ourselves?  Do we have blinders that only allow us to see ourselves as what we want to be?  How we want others to see us?  Or have we removed the blinders to see who we really are?  Few people learn this lesson.

“Control yourself.” A dream is not a true dream if it runs against the welfare of others.  A desire or prayer must mature and achieve growth before it can come forth and conquer the world.

“Deny yourself.”  Jesus taught us this.  He taught us to bring our sincere desire under control and into harmony the the highest good for all.  The final step for the dream to come true is to lose it.  The best way to lose it is to hand it over to Creator God.  It is almost impossible for us to give our desire over to to the will of the Father and let it become a soul’s sincere desire.  But if that desire is surrendered to I AM THAT I AM, the results are so irresistible, so unexplained, so wonderful beyond belief.

Plant the seeds of your prayers in the fertile soil of Creators love and watch them grow into full maturity.  See the fruit of your prayers ripening on the vine ready for the picking.

Are you integrated into yourself?  Are you sincere in your prayers?  Are you integrated with God and mankind?  Are your conscious desires integrated with your subconscious desires?  Are you walking with “feet like hinds”?  Are the things you’re praying for true to your own nature?

Look at your desires you have written down in your notebook and make sure they are true to your own nature.  We should pray for what we truly need, for the things that will help us to bring more perfect expression to our true nature.  Not everyone is able to care for the sick and dying.  There are those who are good at inspiring others to reach their goals.  An oak tree can be nothing other than an oak tree, be true to yourself.

You have to have a certain amount of courage and confidence in your prayer for it to be a spiritual virtue.  Pray with courage and confidence and you prayer will be answered according to God’s plan for you.  Ask Father what His divine inner plan is for your life.  Ask Him to reveal it to you and to bring it forth in perfect sequence and perfect order in such a way that is for the greatest good to the greatest number.  Nothing can change the nature of your prayer and nothing can prevent the fulfillment of your prayer if it is true to your nature. (pages 43- 58)

Meditation

The Lord is close to all who call on Him, to all who call out to Him in truth.  He will fulfill the desire of those who honor and love him.  Lord God preserves all who love Him, who worship Him in truth and spirit.

Prayer

Lord God, as we know the voice of our parents, may we know your voice when ever you speak to us.  May your voice speak within our soul.  AMEN

Protein, Protein and More Protein By Janet Lynas Ph.D., N.H.D.

What is the best source for protein?  Under the section of Natural Health we are discussing the book, The China Study by T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D. and Thomas M. Campbell II.  We are examining the scientific research on proteins that cause cancer in that section.

We are now going to examine which foods are the best source of “low quality” proteins.  We learned in the Natural Health section the difference between “high quality” and “low quality” proteins and that the labeling can be deceptive.

The discussion today is focused on plant based proteins and why plant based proteins are healthier.  Below is a list of plant based proteins recommended by the American Diabetes Association.

Plant-Based Proteins

Plant-based protein foods provide quality protein, healthy fats, and fiber. They vary in how much fat and carbohydrate they contain, so make sure to read labels.

  • Beans such as black, kidney, and pinto
  • Bean products like baked beans and refried beans
  • Hummus and falafel
  • Lentils such as brown, green, or yellow
  • Peas such as black-eyed or split peas
  • Edamame
  • Soy nuts
  • Nuts and spreads like almond butter, cashew butter, or peanut butter
  • Tempeh, tofu
  • Products like meatless “chicken” nuggets, “beef” crumbles, “burgers”, “bacon”, “sausage”, and “hot dogs”

We think about a vegetarian diet as being a diet that doesn’t include meat, poultry or fish. But vegetarian diets vary in what foods they include and exclude:

  • Lacto-vegetarian diets exclude meat, fish, poultry and eggs, as well as foods that contain them. Dairy products, such as milk, cheese, yogurt and butter, are included.
  • Ovo-vegetarian diets exclude meat, poultry, seafood and dairy products, but allow eggs.
  • Lacto-ovo vegetarian diets exclude meat, fish and poultry, but allow dairy products and eggs.
  • Pescatarian diets exclude meat and poultry, dairy, and eggs, but allow fish.
  • Pollotarian diets exclude meat, dairy and fish, but allow poultry.
  • Vegan diets exclude meat, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy products — and foods that contain these products.

Confusing isn’t it!  Let’s focus on a middle of the road approach to a more vegetarian diet called a flexitarian diet.  This diet is primarily a plant-based diet but includes meat, dairy, eggs, poultry and fish on occasion or in small quantities.  This approach is less challenging and easier to transition into.  Later, if you choose to become more vegetarian, it will be easier to make the transition.

One way to ease into a vegetarian diet is to gradually reduce the meat in your diet while increasing fruits and vegetables.

  •  Each week increase the number of meatless meals, such as spaghetti with tomato sauce or vegetable stir-fry. Incorporate ways to include greens, such as spinach, kale, Swiss chard and collards, in your daily meals.
  •  Take your favorite recipes and try them without meat. For example, make vegetarian chili by leaving out the ground beef and adding an extra can of black beans.  You may be surprised to find that many dishes require only simple substitutions.
  •  Search the Internet for vegetarian menus. Buy or borrow vegetarian cookbooks. Check out ethnic restaurants to sample new vegetarian cuisines. The more variety you bring to your vegetarian diet, the more likely you’ll be to meet all your nutritional needs.

Most of us like pizza.  This recipe is a healthy and simple start to eating less meat.

Vegetarian Pizza:

One pizza crust

Top with pizza sauce, your favorite vegetables which could include; carrots, mushrooms, spinach, onions, sweet peppers, squash, olives, tomatoes, feta cheese or your favorite cheese

Use your imagination.  The object is to have a meatless meal.  Use the cheese sparingly, the idea is to have a tasty and healthy meal.

Bake at 400 degrees for about 16-20 minutes

Add a salad to go with the pizza and you have a complete meal.

For dessert try grilled fruit or a sorbet.

Enjoy!!!

The China Study Part 2 by Janet Lynas, Ph.D., N.H.D.

In the China Study, we learn there is a difference between ‘high-quality’ protein and ‘low-quality’ protein.  The words high-quality and low-quality can be misleading in defining which protein is best for the human body.  We are taught that high-quality protein means how fast an organism grows and that it doesn’t necessarily mean the quality of ones health.  We discover that complex metabolic systems, like the human body can derive all the essential amino acids from a variety of plant proteins.

Today we look closer at the protein gap.  The protein gap stipulated that world hunger and malnutrition among children in third world countries was a result of not having enough protein to consume.  Projects were popping up all over the world to address the “protein gap”.  This was in 1976.

  • MIT worked on developing a protein-rich food supplement call INCA-PARINA.
  • Purdue University was breeding a corn to contain more lysine, which is a deficient amino acid in corn protein.
  • The U.S. government was subsidizing the production of dried milk powder to provide high-quality protein.
  • Cornell University was providing researchers to the Philippines to help develop a high-protein rice and a live-stock industry.
  • Auburn University and MIT ground up fish to produce “fish protein concentrate” to feed the world’s poor.

The battle cry was to eradicate world hunger with high-quality protein.  The United Nations, the U.S. Government Food for Peace Program and numerous universities and organizations took up the battle cry that the lack of protein was without question the most serious deficiency in the nutrition of developing countries.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations claimed that the mass population of these countries subsisted mainly on foods derived from plants often deficient in protein, resulting in poor health.  It was strongly advocated increasing the production and consumption of animal protein to feed the world.

Bruce Stillings at the University of Maryland and the U.S. Department of Commerce also promoted the consumption of animal protein even though he stated that, “there is no requirement for animal protein in the diet per se, the quantity of dietary protein from animal sources is usually accepted as being indicative of the overall protein quality of the diet.”

While this may be true, it is not the only way to obtain consistent long-term health.

In 1965, Professor Charlie Engel, at Virginia Tech was instrumental in implementing a “mothercraft” self-help project in the Philippines.  This project focused on educating the mothers of malnourished children on the right kinds of locally grown foods that could make their children well.  In this project, the preference was to develop peanut crops as the centerpiece of protein.  Peanuts are rich in protein and can be grown most anywhere.  However, there was a problem shown with the peanut crops.  They were contaminated with a fungus-produced toxin known as  aflatoxin (AF).  This toxin is shown to cause liver cancer in rats.  It is the most potent chemical carcinogen ever discovered.

The sights of older children blinded by malnutrition being led around by younger siblings asking for handouts are common.  Children born without arms and legs was heartbreaking for these scientists.

These sights motivated the scientists to press forward in the research to resolve the problem with AF contamination in peanuts.  Peanuts are the preferred source of protein.  Two grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) were obtained.  Dr. Campbell and the other researchers conducted surveys to learn which foods had the most contamination of AF.  They discovered that the local foods with the most contamination were peanut butter and corn.  These foods had 300 times the amount of AF judged for safety in the U.S.  Whole peanuts were not as contaminated.  The moldiest nuts for peanut butter were not removed from the conveyor belt in the processing factories.  These moldy nuts were the ones used for peanut butter.

Dr. Campbell became acquainted with a prominent doctor, Dr. Jose Caedo, who was an advisor to then President Marcos.  Dr. Caedo told Dr. Campbell that there was a serious problem of liver cancer among the children in the Philippines.  Liver cancer was claiming the lives of these children before the age of ten.  The most striking information was, “Namely, the children who got liver cancer were from the best-fed families.  They consumed more protein than anyone else in the country (high quality animal protein) and they were the ones getting liver cancer!”

How could this be?  We will take a look at this in the next posting.

Self Hypnosis by Janet Lynas, Ph.D., N.H.D.

August 4, 2017,  a semitrailer ran over me.  Driving to see my first Home Health patient for the day, proved to be a life changing event.  My car, did not survive.  It was totaled.

I am very fortunate and blessed to have survived the accident without broken bones, cuts or life threatening injuries.  I did however, receive an injury to one vital organ, my brain.    For nine months I have been off work on worker’s compensation.  I have ‘Post Concussion Syndrome’.  It is not fun.

What is Post Concussion Syndrome? A personal definition means that I have had the same headache, everyday since August 4, 2017.  The headache never goes away and at times the headache is worse than other times.  This headache has a migraine component to it, along with brain fog.  The accident also caused disturbances in my sleep pattern.  Many nights I did not sleep and on a good night I got about 2-3 hours sleep.  I prefer not to use drugs whenever possible.

I was given a prescription for an opioid for the headache as I was leaving the Emergency Room.  I didn’t want it.  Opioids were never intended for longterm use.  They take the edge off pain, but the pain is still there.  The side effects of opioids are not pleasant.  Our society has an opioid addiction crisis.  During a follow up appointment with employee health,  I was given a prescription for a stronger strength Ibuprofen.  I have taken this prescribed medication on very rare occasions, only when the migraine was exceptionally severe.

So, what have I done to manage the chronic headache?  I practice what I preach.  I use self hypnosis and meditation to manage the head injury pain.  I started self hypnosis the day of the accident.  I visualized my brain and saw the edema surrounding the organ.  I see the inflammation resolving and the brain returning to its normal size.  Giving myself post hypnotic suggestions that the headache will reduce in severity as the swelling in my brain begins to resolve is helpful.

A few weeks after the accident, I was referred to a neurologist for follow up on the headache.  This neurologist is open minded and was willing to work with me on a more holistic approach, especially in light of the fact that he had nothing to offer except, ‘wait and see’.  I was told that the headache may never resolve. (I don’t always take to heart a limiting diagnosis like that one.)  We added higher doses of magnesium and vitamin B 12 to be taken at night to help with the sleep disturbances.

I added meditation to my tool kit to help not only with the headache, but also with the sleeplessness.  Over the months of practicing self hypnosis and meditation, the quality and quantity of sleep has improved.  The severity of the headache has reduced.  I have not had a migraine in the last few months and most nights, I receive between 5-7 hours of sleep.

I fully believe that as I continue with my daily routine of self hypnosis and meditation, the headache will disappear.  At this point in time, the headache has dissipated from a level 6-7 on the pain scale with the migraine component, down to a level 2-3 with a dull ache and no migraine.   The brain fog is no longer a daily challenge, but a rare occasion and it does not last long.

Even after the resolution of the headache, brain fog and sleep disturbances, I will continue with self hypnosis and meditation.  I have gained valuable  insight into my self awareness.  I am now more at ease in dealing with life’s stressors.

Hypnosis and self hypnosis is an effective tool for pain management.  I know from first hand experience.  I have always taught my clients how to do self hypnosis starting with their first visit with me.

Cancer and the American Diet Connection by Janet Lynas Ph.D., N.H.D.

In my last post, I introduced Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D. to you.  Dr. Campbell  maintained a twenty-seven-year laboratory research program in experimental animal studies.  These studies investigated the link between diet and cancer with funding coming from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the late 1960s.  His findings were published in the most prestigious quality scientific journals and brought attention to the core principles of cancer research on the cause of cancer.

Dr. Campbell received a total of seventy-four grant-years and these findings were completed in thirty-five years.  He co-authored over 350 scientific articles.  He was presented numerous  awards for these findings.  Awards from the American Institute for Cancer Research in diet, nutrition and cancer, and was awarded as one of the “Top 25 Food Influentials” by Self magazine in 1998.  In 2004, he was given the Burton Kallman Scientific Award by the Natural Nutrition Food Association.  Dr. Campbell has received several other awards and has been interviewed on at least twenty-five TV programs.  Dr. Campbell is 85 years old and his career spanned over forty-five years.

Why do I go into detail on his background?  I want you to understand how prestigious this man is and the impact he has had on nutrition and health.  This background will also drive home the viciousness of the AMA and our government when to comes to findings on natural cures for disease.

Dr. Campbell’s research in his own laboratory showed in experimental animals that cancer growth can be turned on and off by nutrition, despite strong genetic predisposition.  Eating the right diet not only prevented disease, but also generated health and a sense of well-being, both physically and mentally.  His research has helped athletes both young and old discover that eating a low-fat, plant-based diet gave them a significant edge in performance.

Dr. Campbell states that his entire professional career in biomedical research centered on protein.  Protein research was the cornerstone and the foundation for his research.  From the basic research laboratory to the practical programs of feeding malnourished children in the Philippines and  into the government board rooms where our national health policy was formulated.

The Dutch chemist Gerhard Mulder discovered this nitrogen-containing chemical in 1839 and since its discovery, it has risen to be the most sacred of nutrients.

Dr. Campbell ask what is the first word that comes to mind when we think about protein?  Meat, right?  Taken a step further, one might say beef is an important source of protein.  So, the thought, meat is protein and protein is meat has been hammered into our brain since the discovery of the protein molecule.

A cultural bias became firmly entrenched in society.  If you were rich, you ate meat for protein, but if you were poor, you ate plant based foods, like potatoes and bread.  Protein is a vital component of our bodies.  There are hundreds of thousands of different kinds of proteins.  Proteins must be replaced on a regular basis.  Various food proteins are of different quality, depending on how well they provide the needed amino acids used to replace our body’s proteins.

Dr. Campbell points out that the best source of protein to eat and the one most efficiently providing the building blocks for our protein replacement is human flesh.  Since we are not having our fellow humans as the main course of the meal, we turn to animal protein.  The protein of animals is very similar to our proteins because they mostly have the right amounts of the needed amino acids.  These proteins are call “high quality” and also include the proteins of milk, eggs and dairy products.

The “lower quality” proteins are plant proteins because they may be lacking in one or more of the essential amino acids, but as a group, they do contain all of the amino acids.

In the next posting, we will take a look at the “lower quality” proteins found in plant based protein, which allows for slow but steady synthesis of new proteins and we will discover that this is the healthiest type of protein.  The quality of a protein is based on how fast an animal will grow while consuming that food.  The efficiency of body growth, which is not necessarily good health, encourages protein of “high quality”.  This marketing tactic has been used for over 100 years.  We have been mislead in thinking that the higher the quality the healthier we will be.  We’ve been scammed!   In the following postings we will take a look at which proteins provide the best quality of health and how to prevent disease and reverse the ill effects of eating the wrong diet.

Which are the best proteins?

Do you remember in a previous post that I told you by combining beans and rice, you have a complete protein?

I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes Part 7 by Janet Lynas Ph.D., N.H.D.

FOR THINE IS THE KINGDOM AND THE POWER AND THE GLORY FOR EVER

On the seventh day Glenn Clark talks about letting Christ enter into our life.  Mr. Clark has taught us how to ‘clean house’ so to speak up to this point with the seven Whatwhatsoever checks and the three Anything checks.  Once we have emptied out the selfish desires, then it is time to ask that the Christ  come into our life.  Christ can not come into our life until we invite Him in.

Jesus longs to enter in and join with us even more than we hunger for Him.  He wants to end the separation that we feel, the veil that keeps us separated is the lie that we have been told through countless generations.  In reality, we are not divided from Jesus except by our own doing.

Once we invite Christ to join with us, we then experience the electric-light power of His love, taking us into His family as a beloved brother or sister.  This beautiful expression of love lifts us to a higher plane of consciousness.  We soon learn that by surrendering to the love of Christ, if we ask for His guidance before we make a decision on anything, we will receive invaluable advice and information.

There is one thing that we must be very careful of and that is not to interfere with His action concerning the outcome of our petition.  The Christ requires our absolute trust.  Through the pathway of a peaceful mind only is He able to do His work.

Knowing that the presence of Jesus’ light has completely filled us with His very breath, and our good and most sincere desire is His desire, then is the time to contemplate the deepest wishes of the heart and know that we are able to enter into the holy of holies.  Our feet are becoming as hinds feet and tracking true to the desires of His will, our will aligns with the Savior’s will for us. (pages 39-42)

Meditation

I ask that you O Lord, dwell within Me as I dwell within you.  Nourish my roots, strengthen my branches so that the fruit of your love will bloom forth and grow.  I choose you and invited you to be the caretaker of the fruit of my life.  I ask that you remain within me and that whatsoever I ask, that is in the highest good for all and you may give it to me.

Prayer

Our blessed  Christ the Savior, I invite you to enter into me, to fill me completely, to take control of my life and my heart.  All that I have is yours.  I have no fear as long as you are with me.
