Is it ice cream? Is it a fruit smoothy? Is it both? by Janet Lynas, Ph.D., N.H.D.

Sometimes I just want some ice cream, but I don’t want all the sugar and other high calorie ingredients.  I like homemade ice cream, but I’m lazy when it comes to taking the time to make it.

Satisfying the sweet tooth and the lazy side at the same time

I always use organic frozen fruits when I make my fruit smoothy/ice cream.

  1. Pick out the organic frozen fruit you want to use to make your treat. Sometimes I like strawberry and banana.  Other times, I like blueberries.  Each time is a different tastebud delight!
  2. Organic Almond milk, Flaxseed milk, Cashew milk, it doesn’t matter which one you use.  Use your favorite one.
  3. Put the fruit in the blender, add just enough of the milk to cover the fruit.
  4. Blend the two ingredients together until you have a creamy mixture.
  5. Enjoy your creation!  This is easy, delicious, fast, and healthy!

Nettle Leaf Tea by Janet Lynas, Ph.D., N.H.D.

I just finished a cup of nettle leaf tea.  I added a little unprocessed honey, sat on my patio and enjoyed my cup of tea as I recorded a GoLive video session.

What are the benefits of nettle leaf tea?  Is there a downside to this tea?  Wait!  Isn’t nettle the plant that irritates the skin?

Stinging Nettle Plant

Urtica dioica are known as stinging nettles because the plants’ stems and leaves are covered in hairs that burn the skin when touched. Urtica means “burn” and the stinging or burning sensation is caused by acids and proteins in the nettle plant’s hairs.

A nettle plant is of the family Urticaceae that includes tropical vines and shrubs. Nettles are in the genus Urtica and the species dioica. Dioica means “two houses;” the nettle has all male or all female flowers rather than a mixture.  Interesting that this plant is either male or female.

Benefits of Nettle Tea

Nettle leaf tea is a nutrient-dense drink that contains phytonutrients, minerals and vitamins, especially A and K.

Many of the benefits associated with nettle leaf tea aside from the vitamins it contains, is its high vitamin A content supports cell differentiation, healthy vision and robust immune response. The vitamin K in nettle leaf tea supports cellular functions, including blood clotting and bone metabolism.

In addition to providing nutrients, eating stinging nettles and drinking nettle leaf tea may also provide specific health benefits. Some of benefits these include analgesic pain relief and anti-inflammatory effects as well as antioxidant protection. The nettle plant may also defend against bacterial, fungal and viral infections and help lower blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol.

  • Nettle leaf contains higher levels of vitamin B
  • Nettle leaf is rich in minerals and nutrients, ranging from sulphur and sodium, to magnesium, calcium and iron
  • Nettle leaf provides a good source for protein
Precautions of Using Nettle Leaf

As with many herbs, the most common side effect is an allergic reaction after ingesting nettle leaf tea. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include the development of a rash or hives with a stinging or burning sensation.

There are a couple of other cautions to be aware of, too. Nettle leaf tea is contraindicated for people who use blood thinners due to its high vitamin K content. Pregnant women shouldn’t drink nettle leaf tea, since it may cause uterine contractions.

Vitamin K is used to help the blood clot, so if you are on an anticoagulant, do not drink nettle tea.  Drinking or ingesting nettle leaf will counteract the anticoagulant treatment.

I encourage you to learn more about the nettle plant.

What Happens When Collagen Declines In Your Body by Janet Lynas, Ph.D., N.H.D.

What is collagen? Collagen is the main structural protein in the extracellular space in the various connective tissues in the body. What? What is extracellular space? Extracellular space is the space outside of the cell. I’m not going into detail on the extracellular space in this article, I don’t think you really want an anatomy lesson.  But, the composition of the extracellular space in made up of proteins, growth factors, hormones, and biochemical receptors just to name a few functions that affect the function of the cell.

As the main component of connective tissue, collagen is the most abundant protein in mammals, it makes 25% to 35% of the whole-body protein content. Collagen consists of amino acids bound together to form triple-helices of elongated fibrils. It is mostly found in fibrous tissues such as tendons, ligaments, and skin.

Collagen and the skin

Let’s face it, most of us are looking for the fountain of youth.  As we age, the level of collagen within our body declines causing the skin to wrinkle and sag.  We begin to wonder who that person is in the mirror looking back at us.  My dad says, “I’m a young man trapped in an old man’s body!”  Most of us can relate to this statement.  While the mirror shows us an older person, our mind is still reflecting the image of a youthful person.  What a cruel trick to play on us!

Did you know collagen makes up approximately 80 percent of the dry weight of your skin. While collagen provides structure to the skin, it also works in conjunction with another protein called elastin.  Elastin allows skin the flexibility it needs to stretch and return to its original state as your body moves.  Think of the stretch marks pregnant women try so hard to avoid!  Without elastin, we would be in a great deal of trouble as our body changes throughout the decades.

Collagen and the bones

Collagen also has an important function in bone. Bone is made up of a mixture of collagen and a mineral called hydroxyapatite. Collagen and hydroxyapatite work together to form the structure, flexibility and strength of your bones. Also science has shown us that approximately 30 percent of bones are made up of organic materials, in which collagen makes up to 95 percent.

So if your bones and joints are creaking and popping and hurting, you can thank the decrease of collagen in your body for these changes.

Collagen and muscles

Collagen is also important in maintaining the function of your muscles. Fibers of collagen provide your muscles with the strength and structure needed to move and serve your muscles throughout the day.  The strength of the muscle tissue reflects on how well we’re able to preform our daily task.  It also determines how well supported our skeletal system is.

Collagen fibers also make up your smooth muscles (such as those in the bladder and reproductive system) and your cardiac (heart) muscles.

You can see how important collagen is in heart health.  When we have a strong heart muscle, our heart will operate at optimal efficiency.

Collagen and vessel health

Collagen makes up the walls of the veins, arteries and capillaries in the body. This gives the vessels strength, structure and flexibility, all of which are needed to effectively transport blood throughout your entire body.  Without the flexibility in the walls of our vessels, the body would not be able to transport the nutrients, oxygen and blood throughout our system.

Collagen Products

What do you need to avoid in collagen supplements?

Soy Fillers
Citric Acid
Artificial Additives
Non-hydrolyzed Collagen
Dairy Preservatives
Natural Flavor

Beware of natural flavors

When you see a collagen product or any product labeled ‘natural flavors,’ run the other way! Run fast!  That’s because natural flavors are derived from chemicals found in food, but are later enhanced in a laboratory. Natural flavors are not actually natural.

The FDA hasn’t officially defined what natural flavors mean, so it can actually be used to describe a lot of different things that may not always be good for you.  It’s a marketing tactic to fool you into thinking it’s safe and healthy for you.

Also look to see if all the ingredients are listed.  Often times the ingredients can be packaged into a vague description that is not helpful or forth coming.

Make sure the dosing is accurate with each serving.  If there are fillers the dose may not be accurate.

What to look for in a collagen product

Diverse Amino Acid Profile
Pasture-Raised Hydrolyzed Collagen From Bovine
Type I and II Collagen
Magnesium

It is my experience in testing collagen products, that most are a waste of money.  They do not live up to what is claimed in the marketing advertising.

Having said this, there is one product I found that has lived up to the claims and has scientific research supporting the promises made by this company.  I’m not easily convinced on a product’s claim on the health benefits.  I have been using this particular product for a couple of months and I’m impressed with the results I am getting.  I see scars that I have had for decades disappear, then I know that this product is the real deal.

Is There Only One Path To Follow? by Janet Lynas, Ph.D., N.H.D.

I recently did a hypnosis session for a fifteen year-old girl who remarked several times about staying in the right path.  A week later while I was walking in nature, I began to think about her words.  She was obsession about being and staying on the right road.  I get my best ideas when I’m out in nature, so I let my mind wander on this subject of ‘being on the right path’.  The further I walked, the more I thought about the pressure she was putting on herself.  Is there only one path for each of us to follow?

Staying on the path

So, how do you stay on the path?  Interestingly enough, we can take the advice of hikers.

  1. Have a good map. A topographical map is always good.  In life, having an overview of your own life and what you want to do in life is always good.  By having a topographic image of what you want to accomplish in life helps you see the big picture so to speak.  Looking down on the land beneath us helps us to see where we are and where we want to be.  From this viewpoint we see there is more than one way to reach our goal.
  2. Find an experienced hiking buddy, one who can guide you along the way.  Be open to listening to the advice you are given.  However, trust your intuition and be prepared to leave the trail if needed.  While we need the advice of others, understand that the information is coming from their perspective.  At times a mentor may try to influence us to take certain actions, that while these actions are correct, it may not be the best course for you.
  3. Check-in stations along the way are beneficial and necessary.  It’s important to ‘check-in’ to make sure you’re on the right path, but it’s also important to make sure there are no obstacles that could change your course of action if you stay on that trail.
  4. Stop, look, and listen.  When the path seems to be coming to a dead-end, then it’s time to stop going on down that trail and look around to see if there’s a better alternative.  Listen to your higher-self.  That intuition will lead you to safety if you allow it to.  Look at the situation honestly.  Don’t be so determined to stay on this particular trail that you get totally lost.
  5. Seek help when needed and be willing to give help when you can.  We all need help as we journey through life.  If we are willing to ask for help, it’s not a sign of weakness, but an indication of a strong confident person.  You don’t have to have all the answers.  No-one has all the answers.
When do you know it’s time to change directions

You’ve heard the saying, “When one door closes, another one opens”.  Remember the times you were trying to make a situation work and you just couldn’t get all the pieces to fall into place?  These are the times when we need to stop and re-evaluate our course of action.  While there may be obstacles on the path, we have to recognize those moments when it’s no longer a blockage on the path, but a dead-end and potentially a dangerous road that we’re on.

When things seem impossible

When the path you are on seems to be impossible to walk, go back to step one.  Look at the topographical map.  You may find that there are several paths you can take to accomplish what you need to safely reach the goal you set for yourself in life.

Remember, there is always more than one way to do things and have it turn out right.  So it is with walking your path.  There’s more than one right path to take in life.  One will still end up where you need to be in the end.

I have learned through the years that the road is not straight and narrow.  There are curves, blind spots, obstacles, and adventures that we could not have ever imagined.  Don’t worry so much about the path, but enjoy the journey.

Read the article about the hypnosis session with the 15 year old under hypnosis.  You may be surprised how the session turned out!
