Part Two on Preventive Treatment for Alzheimer’s by Janet Lynas, Ph.D., N.H.D.

In the last installment, we looked at the first five steps to eliminate Alzheimer’s. Today we will look at the next five steps toward better health.

As always, DO NOT STOP TREATMENT without consultation with your provider.

In step six, we are looking at Nerve Growth Factor. There are numerous ads for supplements to improve brain health… It can put your brain into overload with all the ads! When brain cells are healthy and regenerated your memory will be improved. Which supplements really work? Where is the research behind the statements?

Part of my training in Natural Health includes Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, Naturopathic, and Homeopathic approaches. As a natural healthcare practitioner, I always look for proven modalities.

Step Six Supplement Treatments

There are several supplements that have been used by Indians medicinally for generations.  One in Loin’s Mane (Hericium Erinaceous), mushroom extract, Bacopa Monnieri and citicoline. Research has shown that Lion’s Mane is a type of mushroom containing two types of Nerve Growth Function.  There have been multiple studies showing positive results in brain function.

A trial study has shown that Bacopa is successful in improving the ability to maintain attention focus and verbal recall.

Citicoline is a chemical naturally found in the the brain.  This chemical is needed to increase the production of phosphatidylcholine which is very important for brain function.

Step Seven Supplement Treatment

Science has long ago shown that as the level of mitochondria regulation decrease, so does brain function.  As, the mitochondria dysfunction, there is a decline for the brain to function properly and as a result your memory will decline.

Supplements that have been effective include; PQQ (Pyrroloquinoline Quinone) and CoQ10.  There is an accumulation of amyloid in the brain as Alzheimer’s progresses. PQQ has been shown to reduce the amount of amyloid in the brain from forming.  Laboratory experiments have shown that CoQ10 helped mice in improving memory and learning capabilities.  It is recommended that both PQQ and CoQ10 be taken daily.

Step Eight Supplement Treatment

Being a “couch potato” is not healthy for your body or your brain.  Physical exercise stimulates the circulation throughout your body, making cells and tissue healthier.  When circulation is stimulated the level of oxygen in the bloodstream is increased in turn, making tissues and cells healthier.  Learn a new dance and go dancing to exercise.  Dancing is more fun than running around a track.

Exercise your brain with word puzzles and learning new things such as a new language.  (I know, learning a new language can be a challenge.  I botch English!)  Be brave and try something you may have wanted to do, but never got around to it.  Learn to play a musical instrument!

A good multivitamin is recommended for overall health.

Step Nine Nocturnal Oxygenation

What is nocturnal oxygenation?  Nocturnal oxygenation is how much oxygen is getting to your brain at night.  The most common disturbance with nocturnal oxygenation is sleep apnea.  If you find that you are waking up gasping for air during sleep or being tired in the morning, you may want to talk with your health care provider about having a sleep study.  If your partner complains of excessive snoring or tells you that you stop breathing while you are asleep, a sleep study may be in order.

Step Ten Detoxing Heavy Metals

Research, autopsy results specifically, show that heavy metals in the environment are linked to Alzheimer’s.  How do you detox your body?  Chelation therapy is one method of removing heavy metals from the body.  This is an IV treatment that should be done by a trained practitioner.  This IV solution is usually a mixture of vitamins and minerals.  It is effective in removing the heavy metals from the body.  Seek out a medically trained practitioner who does the treatment in a clinical setting.

What? There are 36 Deficiencies Contribute to Alzheimer’s? by Janet Lynas, Ph.D.,N.H.D.

Do you know that we all die from the same disease?  Yes, we really do!  The root cause of all illness is inflammation.  Dementias are inflamed brains.  In this article, I will talk about some of the most common deficiencies contributing to dementia.

Dr. Dale Bredesen is a researcher on Alzheimer’s disease explains how each deficiency fits together in creating memory problems.  Below will be a link on Dr. Dale Bredesen if you want to do further reading on his research.

What are some of the deficiencies contributing to Alzheimer’s?

Research has shown that individuals who are experiencing memory problems should be tested by having blood drawn to determine such markers as Vitamin D level, Insulin level, hormone level, and the use of DHA (omega-3 fatty acids) to improve any faulty connections in the brain activity.

In Dr. Bredesen’s research it was noted that the individual subjects improved once they were on an individual combination therapy.  The study was a very small study of 10 subjects, so this study should be replicated for further validation.  Within a few months nine of the participants were showing improvement with their cognitive level.  Six of the subjects who were struggling to remain employed, had shown significant improvement in their ability to preform their job duties.  Some of the participants showed improvement and returned to a normal level. There was only one subject who did not show improvement.  This subject was in the final stages of Alzheimer’s.

What are some of the steps to eliminate Alzheimer’s?
  1. Reduce Inflammation and stabilize glucose levels in the bloodstream. People with Type 2 Diabetes have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s since high levels of glucose in the blood are commonly known as one of the main causes of Alzheimer’s.  The treatment is diet.  A diet low in grains, simple carbohydrates, and sugars on the low glycemic index are recommended for this step.  Instead of processed foods, you should eat fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, and lean meats.  I recommend that meat be on the occasional list.  Don’t eat within 3 hours of bed time.  Your body needs this fasting time to balance the hormones such as insulin production and to eliminate waste and toxins from the body.  Try to eat as much organic foods as you can. So, are there supplements that are recommended? DHA or omega – 3 fatty acid, EPA,(eicosapentaenoic acid) which is also an omega – 3 fatty acid, and curcumin. Curcumin is naturally found in turmeric.  This supplement helps to reduce amyloid plaques in the brain which enables better brain function.

Other treatment is good oral care.  Poor dental care can lead to inflammation of the gums and teeth.  In turn this causes the inflammatory response through the body.

  2. Optimize Hormone levels.  The aging process contributes to changes in the production of hormone levels. (I will not recommend hormone treatments. This is between you and your physician.  However, I encourage you to research the natural protocols on hormone replacement.)  The most common hormonal problems are related to the thyroid and decreasing estrogen production.  Research showed it’s not necessary to have hormone replacement therapy to restore cognitive function.  Treatment for hormone level starts with a simple blood test.  You have to know what your levels are before you can know how to treat them.  Reduce stress!  As you already know, stress can cause heart disease, anxiety, stroke… you get the picture.  Learn stress reduction techniques such as yoga, meditation, exercise such as going for a walk in nature. Supplements recommended are vitamin D3, ashwagandha which helps to prevent beta-amyloid plaques from forming in the brain.
  3. Antioxidants. Research has shown the importance of antioxidants when it comes to fats oxidizing in the brain and the strong correlation with Alzheimer’s.  Increase your vitamin C and beta-carotene in reducing fat oxidization in the brain.  As in step one, the same diet recommendations are made.  Also, spinach, kale, oranges and foods high in beta-carotene and vitamin C.  Organic blueberries are rich in these vitamins. Supplements recommended are tocotrienols and tocopherols which are forms of vitamin E, selenium, vitamin C, N-Acetyl cysteine and alpha-lipoic acid.
  4. Optimize Gut health.  Researchers have discovered a link between the number of healthy flora in the gut and brain function.  Gut health is essential for overall health.  The diet recommended is the same as in step one.  Grains are hard to digest and are hard on gut flora.  Reduce the grains in your diet.  Supplements recommended are a good probiotic (make sure it has live flora).  Probiotics break down the glutamate which is known to produce gamma-amino butyric acid otherwise known as GABA.  GABA is a neurotransmitter in the brain.  When there is a decline in GABA, there is a decline in brain function.  So, probiotics are essential in ensuring healthy levels of GABA.
  5. Fats. I am talking about healthy fats to absorb fat soluble vitamins.  These healthy fats are needed to keep our brain in good working order. Healthy fats include olive oil, avocados, nuts, seeds, and olives.  These fats help produce acetylcholine which is vital in learning and concentration and memory.  Once again, the diet remains the same as already suggested. Along with DHA and EPA one should add MCT oil which is derived from coconuts.  As far as fats go, if the table says partially hydrogenated, this means trans-fat.  Leave it on the shelf!

In the next article, I will address the next five steps in brain health.  Take this time to really look at your diet.  It’s up to you if you want to improve brain health or not.

Through the years, I have seen more patients than not just wanting the doctor to give them a pill to “fix” the problem.  Patients often would ask the physician to increase the dose of their medication to control glucose levels, instead of improving their diet.

I ask you… Are you going to continue being lazy? Or, are you going to take responsibility for your own health?

Alzheimer’s and Dementia, Is There A Cure? by Janet Lynas, Ph.D., N.H.D

Alzheimer’s is one of the scariest words in any language.  In today’s society many people live in fear of getting Alzheimer’s disease.  We will do just about anything to prevent developing the disease.  However, there are other forms of dementia that are just as devastating.

Brain Health

In this series of articles, I will look at the latest research on brain health and what steps need to be taken to keep our brain healthy.  The areas I will focus on are: diet and how a nutritional program can protect your precious memories, how to clean your brain and stop dementia and Alzheimer’s, and natural health approach to preventing and reversing dementia.  Can a virus be the underlying cause of Alzheimer’s?  We will look at toxic substances that contribute to making your brain sick.

Is There A Protocol For Reversing/Curing Alzheimer’s?

I will address the issues that cause Alzheimer’s and the the 36 deficiencies and sources that contribute to dementias.  New research will be presented to back up the 10 steps to take for better brain health.

What Is Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive condition in which nerve cells in the brain degenerate and the brain shrinks. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia (a general decline in all areas of mental ability).

What Is Dementia?

Dementia refers to a category of diseases that cause loss of memory and deterioration in other mental functions. Dementia occurs due to physical changes in the brain and is a progressive disease, meaning it gets worse over time.

What’s the difference between the two?

Alzheimer’s is one kind of dementia and is often a “catch all” term for dementia.  Alzheimer’s is the most talked about dementia, but is it the most common dementia?

There is approximately  7.7 million new cases of dementia diagnosed every year.  World wide there are 47.5 million people who are living and struggling with dementia. Based on the high number of individuals affected, dementia is one of the leading causes of dependency and mental impairment among the elderly population.

Around 70 percent of dementia cases are due to Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia that is a progressive disorder that gradually causes loss of memory and deterioration in cognitive skills.
Of the remaining cases, the second most common type is type of dementia is Vascular Dementia.  Vascular dementia is a common type of dementia that occurs due to disruption in blood flow to the brain. Symptoms include confusion, difficulty maintaining balance, agitation and memory loss.  These systems are seen when an individual is has had a stroke.

Due to longer life expectancies and the baby boomer population, the percentage of Americans living with this disease will increase in the upcoming years.

During my career as a mental health nurse with the Veteran’s Administration, it was noted that early onset dementia was seen in veterans who where long term users of marijuana and a few veterans who worked in the chemical research areas.

What is the economic impact of dementia?

A total of 4.8 million persons aged 65 and older were included in this study. The overall observed prevalence of dementia in the Medicare sample was 8.5% (Table 1). It increased from 2.8% for the persons aged 65–74 to 24.9% in the group aged 85 and older. The prevalence for women is higher than for men (9.94 versus 6.39). The prevalence is also noticeably higher in blacks and Hispanics compared with whites and other ethnicities. (https://academic.oup.com/jpubhealth/article/37/4/597/2362594)

Looking at the economic impact of dementia, including unpaid care provided by families, is estimated at $159 billion to $215 billion per year in the United States.  (Hurd et al, 2013)  And estimated at more than $600 billion worldwide (Wimo et al, 2013)

(www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov › Journal List › HHS Author Manuscripts)

The next article will investigate how diet can affect the development of dementia.  We will look at the research on reversal of dementia through diet.

Samson’s Secret for Thicker Hair by Janet Lynas, Ph.D., N.H.D.

I want to go on record as saying, baldness in a man can be sexy.  However, the reality is, most men feel less confident when they lose their hair.  It’s a shame how much emphasis we place on looks instead of the character of the individual.

Judges 14:9

In the story about Samson and Delilah, we read about Samson’s long hair and that God gave Samson his strength.  Now I know you are asking, “What does Judges and the story of Samson have to do with hair?”

Well, just hang in there for a few minutes and you will find out!  Judges 14:9 tells the story about Samson traveling through the vineyards of the Sorek Valley near his home in Timnah.  Samson becomes hungry and finds a beehive inside the carcass of a lion.  I can just imagine how hungry Samson had to have been to want to scoop a handful of the hive from the smelly carcass of a dead lion.  Most people think that Samson was eating honey from the hive, but he wasn’t.  He was eating part of the hive, the honeycomb.  Now the honeycomb contains the Royal Jelly that nourishes the queen bee.  This Royal Jelly is a powerhouse of nutritional life giving nutrients.

The queen bee is larger and stronger and lives longer than all the other bees because she is the only one who eats Royal Jelly.

Again, what does this have to do with regrowing hair?  I’m getting to it, just be patient.

The Missing Link

It seems that testosterone once again comes into play.  Can’t seem to live with it, certainly can’t live without it.  Once again, if you have too much testosterone it can cause hair lost.  Deep inside of your hair follicles is an enzyme called dihydrotestosterone (DHT).  We’ve talked about this enzyme earlier.  DHT is like testosterone on steroids, it’s actually 5 times more potent than testosterone.  So, the enzyme that helps make you a man, is also the problem with hair loss.

As a man ages, DHT shrinks the hair follicles to the point that the follicles are no longer able to produce hair.

This is where the Royal Jelly comes into the picture.  You see, this missing link helps to fight off DHT and restore your hair. But, how can Royal Jelly help with hair loss?

Royal Jelly contains a substance called Quebrachol which is also called beta sitosterol.  This substance is also found in plants and sometimes animals.  Plants containing sitosterol include soybeans, avocados and nuts.

Because of Quebrachol combination of natural elements it literally helps to prevent your body from converting testosterone into DHT.

The scientific research behind this is indisputable. Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies were conducted to determine the effect of Quebrachol on DHT hair loss.  I’m not going into the studies at this time.

Come to find out, there is a second potent ingredient in Royal Jelly that is a building block to restore your hair.  Coenzyme R or biotin has a unique molecular structure.  Coenzyme R transforms your food into the building blocks to grow thicker hair.

“What foods do I need to eat and how much?”, you ask.  Sorry to tell you, but in this case you get better results from a supplement.

I have researched supplements on hair regrowth and one of the supplements that have a good track record is called Restore FX by NorthStar Nutritionals.  The way this supplement works is that is contains 100 mg of Qluebrachol to stop the hair-destroying DHT.  Each serving also contains 600 mcg of Coenzyme R as well to support hair growth.  This supplement is mixed with an herbal extract that contains Serenoa to help reopen the hair follicles.  The next extract is Pygeum which is an extract from the African cherry tree.  The fourth herbal extract is Camellia Sinensis which is derived from a plant in East Asia.  It has been used since 2737 BC.

Building Blocks for Hair Regrowth

Coenzyme R works on the cellular level to make the hair follicles and roots strong. The second building block is Zinc which is crucial for hair growth.  The third is Copper and copper is essential for human life to survive.  Coming in Fourth is Sulfur.  Sulfur makes the hair strong and make a flexible bond in connecting hair cells. Coming in fifth place it Vitis Vinifera which comes from a Moroccan vine.  This compound contains an ingredient that binds to keratin in hair and stops the breakdown due to environmental stress. Number six is Stinging Nettle.  Stinging Nettle includes the minerals iron and calcium.  Stinging Nettles has also been used for joint pain.  Then in seventh place is Diindolylmethane (DIM).  This natural component comes from cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale and Brussel sprouts.  And last, but not least is Gamma-Linolenic Acid known as GLA.  GLA is an omega-6 essential fatty-acid.  It helps to treat inflamed hair follicles as well as inflammation throughout the body.

You can find more information about this supplement at:  www.northstarnutritionals.com

Restore FX will not drain your testosterone either.

I don’t usually talk about a brand name product, but in this case I thought I would mention it so you can decide for yourself.  If you try it let me know how it worked for you.

Men, How To Build Lean Muscles by Janet Lynas, Ph.D., N.H.D.

Do you find that you exercise, but it seems as though you are not getting the desired results you have been sweating and working for?

On top of that have you noticed:

< skin tags on your neck that were not there before

< excess weight in your stomach area, but not in your hips

< loss of sexual desire

< inability to maintain an erection like you could a few years ago

It happens as men age. What is the underlying cause when your doctor tells you that your testosterone levels are normal for a man your age? Perhaps your doctor has just used the standard hormone testing guidelines he/she has been taught to use.

Is it about the level of hormones or how your body is using them?

Your physician should test for free testosterone.  Testosterone is linked or bound to a protein called ‘sex hormone binding globulin’ or SHPG.  When you are bound by ropes you are not able to move, you are rendered inactive.  It’s the same with testosterone, as long as it is bound to the SHPG, it will be inactive.  Testosterone has be ‘freed’ before it can do its job in metabolism, releasing energy for you to be active, to improve your circulation, and sexual functions.

Too much of a good thing!

Both males and females have testosterone and estradiol, a form of estrogen.  These hormones are critical for human sexuality.  In the male, estrogen receptors are found in the brain, testes and penis.  By receptors, we mean that the body is expecting to be stimulated.

On the other hand, the role in regulating the male reproductive system doesn’t mean that estradiol necessarily stimulates it.  In reality, it can suppress male sexuality.  There has to be a balance.

In summary, the higher the estradiol level in the male body, the less active the free testosterone is.  It has been shown that the male body’s pathways can actually convert testosterone into estradiol.  Testosterone has to be free to do its thing!  So, free the testosterone!

As you can see, both testosterone and estradiol need to be measured.  If a doctor prescribes testosterone creams for a man without screening the whole hormone panel, the man will exhibit subtle signs of increased estrogen, such as ‘extra man breast’ and the size of the testicles will diminish in size.  Scary isn’t it?

What are the final pieces to the hormone puzzle?

The last two test to the puzzle are the glycohemoglobin test also known as HbA1c.  This test as you have learned from watching commercials, test the glucose level in your blood.  Increased blood sugar is associated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and a number of other physical findings such as skin tags around the neck and a big belly.

The big belly fat with low testosterone has been shown time and time again.  Increased belly fat raises the level of the enzyme that helps to break testosterone down into estradiol.  This results in high estrogen levels and low testosterone levels.

The final piece to the hormone puzzle is luteinizing hormone or LH.  This hormone is produced in the pituitary gland. As LH goes up in response to low testosterone levels, it works harder to stimulate more production of testosterone.  If both the LH and testosterone are low, the pituitary gland becomes exhausted and it isn’t being stimulated by the hypothalamus and is missing one of the key nutrients such as zinc or manganese.

Make sure your physician test for all four of these levels.  Remember, what’s normal on the test may not be normal for you.  If you still don’t feel up to par, ask your doctor to run a full hormone panel that includes free testosterone, estradiol, HbA1c and LH.  You may also ask for a referral to an endocrinologist.

What is the solution?

Your doctor should be prescribing a custom compounded cream for you that includes a biological form of testosterone as well as an herb called chrysin, which naturally inhibits the conversion of testosterone into estradiol.  A boron supplement with help to boost the production of testosterone into estradiol.  The last piece in the puzzle is to add the herb berberine to help control blood glucose.  Next, get on a healthy diet to help you shed unwanted and unneeded pounds.  In just a few short months you should see and feel a difference in the way you look.  Your energy level should be higher as well as your endurance.

The next posting will talk about that thinning hair and what you can do naturally to have thicker hair.

What Are The Solutions For Stronger Intimacy? by Janet Lynas, Ph.D., N.H.D.

We’ve talked about the changes we face as we age and how these changes affect men.  Impotency messes with a man’s mind and self-esteem more than just about any other health problem. Men are embarrassed to talk about erectile dysfunction, ED, even with their physicians.

We talked about some of the causes of ED.  Again I want to emphasize that prescription drugs are at the top of the list of causes of ED.  Did you know that there are at least 84 prescription drugs that list ED as a side effect.  (Do not stop any of your medications without having a discussion with your doctor.)

What are some of the treatments for ED?

The most popular treatments are Viagra and Cialis.  Yes, another pill, but do you know that these drugs can actually make heart disease worse?  These drugs are dangerous if they are taken with certain cardiac medications.  They can even cause death.  Most of the men I have work with in the medical setting complain that these medications cause sever headaches.  They don’t like taking theses medications because of the side effects.

As a woman, I would not want my partner to risk his health or life with these prescriptions.  My partner’s health would be more important to me than what goes on in the bedroom.  There are other alternatives.

I never did understand the Cialis commercial on TV.  The one with two people sitting outside in antique bathtubs holding hands.  I just don’t get the connection.

What are the alternatives?

My background is in traditional medicine.  Traditional medicine is the reason I earned a Ph.D. in Natural Health.  On two occasions I had deadly serious complications from prescribed medications and nearly died. Numerous other times I have had serious complications with prescriptions.  I had to find an alternative for maintaining my health and for self preservation.

So, keeping this in mind, I will talk about safe alternatives that are known to work.  The science is behind the information.

There is a powerful trio of natural herbs that are known to help with ED.  There was a study published in the World Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences talking about this power packed trio.

Researchers found that L-arginine, Pycnogenol and Red ginseng have helped most men. Research also shows that men 25 to 45 with documented ED had a 90% improvement by the 3rd month.  The first month these  men were given low dose of these herbs and saw a mild improvement.  The second month, the dose was increased and the results were 80% improvement.  By the 3rd month when the dose was once again increased, there was a 90% improvement!  No side effects!  Completely safe!

Big Pharma doesn’t want this information out because they can’t patent herbs.  Since they can’t patent herbs, they will tell you that the combination doesn’t work.

Let’s break down the herbs and take a closer look at the herbs and the science behind them.

Better blood flow means stronger performance!

L-arginine has many health benefits, but we are only going to review the effects it has on ED. The primary effect of L-arginine is its ability to form nitric oxide.  The purpose of nitric oxide is to relax the blood vessels including the ones flowing to the penis.  When nitric oxide is channeled to the penis, it becomes engorged with blood during sexual arousal.  There have been a number of studies on the effects of L-arginine confirming this.

Now, when you add in Pycnogenol you have created a powerful combination.  Pycnogenol is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.  (I have recommend Pycnogenol for clients with arthritis.  These clients saw results in movement and pain reduction when taking daily.  I have also recommended Pycnogenol for ADD.  Results have been remarkable.)

Pycnogenol, is an extract from the Martine Pine Bark tree in France.  This extract is more potent than the grape seed extract.  The whole component from the extract is needed for optimal results. Pycnogenol drastically increases the over-all blood flow, especially to the sexual organs.

Next in the mix is Red ginseng.  Red ginseng is used in Traditional Chinese medicine to increase stamina, strength and virility in men.  (Part of my training is in TCM.)   Red Ginseng has been confirmed in studies to show it can treat and prevent male sexual dysfunction.  In a double-blind study published in the Asian Journal of Andrology, 80 men with documented ED were given 1,000 mg of Red ginseng and the results were uniformly positive.  Analysis from different studies reveal that Red ginseng performs significantly better than a placebo.  The Siberian variety doesn’t contain the ginsenosides that are active and therapeutic in the other forms of Red ginseng. So, avoid the Siberian ginseng if you are wanting to improve your performance and have good results.

Safety first!

These herbs have been used for thousands of years (yes, thousands) and are proven to be safe.  If you are given a choice to improve your health in a safe way, why wouldn’t you?

For the women out there who are reading this article in hopes of helping the man in your life, these herbs are just as beneficial to you as they are for your man.

Big Pharma is good to hide and cover up the dangers of their products.  They put out false information about the effectiveness of nature’s healing powers.  They want to cover up the healing powers nature has because they can’t patent herbs and charge big fees for them.  I urge you to do your research on all medications you are taking so you are informed.

What Causes Male Impotence? by Janet Lynas, Ph.D., N.H.D.

In the first installment on Men’s Health we discussed changes in one’s body as we age.  We talked about the changes women go through and how women have similar problems with intimacy just as men do.  Men you are not alone.

Today I will address the most common causes of impotence, remember impotence is not just in men, but with women as well.

What Are The Most Common Causes Of Impotence?

Did you know that your medications are playing havoc with your sex life?  So can your emotions and stress.

There can be several contributing factors for impotence. These include both emotional and physical disorders. According to The Merck Manual, an estimated 50 percent of men ages 40 to 70 experience some ED at one time or another. The risk of impotence increases with age.  Note it says, risk, not that it will happen.

Taking certain medications can affect blood flow, which can lead to ED. You should never stop taking a medicine without a discussion with your doctor, even if it’s known to cause impotence.

Examples of medications known to cause impotence include:

  • alpha-adrenergic blockers, including tamsulosin (Flomax)
  • beta-blockers, such as carvedilol (Coreg) and metoprolol (Lopressor)
  • cancer chemotherapy medications, such as cimetidine (Tagamet)
  • central nervous system depressants, such as alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium), and codeine (found in various brand name drugs)
  • central nervous system stimulants, such as cocaine or amphetamines
  • diuretics, such as furosemide (Lasix) and spironolactone (Aldactone)
  • selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs (Prozac, Paxil)
  • synthetic hormones, such as leuprolide (Eligard)

Depression and anxiety also contribute to increased risk for impotence. Depression is a feeling of sadness, loss of hope, or helplessness. Fatigue related to depression can also cause impotence.

Performance anxiety can be another cause of impotence. If a man wasn’t able to achieve an erection in the past, he may fear he won’t be able to achieve an erection in the future. Men may  find that they can’t achieve an erection with a certain partner. The fear of failing again with the same partner can cause performance anxiety. You may find you are able to have full erections when masturbating or when sleeping, yet you aren’t able to maintain an erection during intercourse.

The body’s endocrine system produces hormones that regulate metabolism, sexual function, reproduction, mood, and so much more.  Diabetes is the number one endocrine system organic cause of impotence.

Diabetes affects the body’s ability to utilize the hormone insulin. One of the side effects associated with chronic diabetes is nerve damage. Other complications associated with diabetes are impaired blood flow and hormone levels.

Several neurological diseases can cause impotence.  Diseases such as dementias, Multiple Sclerous, Parkinson’s, and brain injuries to name a few illnesses.

Men who have had prostate gland surgery can also experience nerve damage that causes impotence.

And did you know long distance bicycle riders can also experience temporary impotence. The reason is because of the repeated pressure on the buttocks and genitals. This pressure can affect the function of the nerves.

Unhealthy lifestyles can contribute to impotence.  Smoking, the abuse of drugs such as amphetamines and cocaine. Men with alcoholism and alcohol abuse cannot maintain a full erection during intercourse.  Men who are obese can find it difficult to be intimate.

What Are The Percentages?

The National Institutes of Health estimates that erectile dysfunction strikes as many as 30 million men in the United States. Its prevalence does increase with age — 4 percent of men in their 50s are affected by ED, 17 percent in their 60s, and 47 percent of those over 75.

The next installment will talk about solutions.  We will look at the traditional treatment of medications and the side effects.  We will also take a look at some natural remedies that can be used.

Men’s Health, What Could a Woman Possibly Know About Men’s Health? by Janet Lynas, Ph.D., N.H.D.

I’m starting a series on Men’s Health. What could a woman possibly know about men’s health? You’re not a man, so how can you understand what’s important to a man?

You’re right, I’m not a man. Most of what men read about in men’s health is from the male prospective.  Maybe you would like to learn about men’s health from a woman’s prospective.  Sometimes women have a deeper understanding about what’s going on with the men in their lives than the men realize.

My series will start with middle aged men and their concerns about growing older.  The top concern I hear men talking about is their sexual prowess.  I have heard horror stories about men taking more than the prescribed dosage with Viagra and Cialis.  These same men have also added Power Drinks into the mix for more energy.  This is a deadly cocktail.  You’re lucky you’re still alive!

Before I dive right into the topic of sexual prowess, I want to discuss sex from the middle aged woman’s prospective.

Men Are Not Alone In Decreased Libido

Men, you are not the only ones who are facing difficulty with sexual performance.  Women have a better understanding on decreased libido and decreased energy than you think.  We understand the affect this issue has not only on the physical aspect of having sex, but also the devastating affect on the emotional level.

Women are embarrassed about their inability to preform just as men are.  Let’s take a look at the physical changes that take place in a woman’s body and how it affects them.

  • Menopause – Did you know that some women start peri-menopause in their 30s?  Menopause is a difficult time for most women.  Hormones fluctuate causing mood swings and hot flashes.  Menopause also contributes to loss of libido in women.  This stage of life will pass.  Women are looking for natural ways to get through this stage of life instead of using the dangerous hormone replacement therapy.  Many women feel that they are less of a woman if they can’t reproduce children.  As a woman ages, she feels that she will be over looked by men for younger more vibrant women.  This is devastating for the woman.
  • Vagina Dryness – This often occurs with menopause, but stress can contribute to it as well. Vaginal dryness causes intercourse to be painful.  Even with lubrication sex can be painful.  Experiment with different lubricants to find one that works best for the two of you.
  • Sexual disfunction – Women are just as embarrassed to discuss sexual disfunction as men are.  She may not even be able to put into words why she has lost the desire to have sex.  When she says, “It’s not you, it’s me” believe her!  There are natural ways for her to increase her sexual performance and many women are talking more openly about the situation.
  • Organism Problems – There are times when women will not be able to have an organism.  It’s just as frustrating to her as it is for you when you have a problem in achieving an erection.  Sometimes the problem is physical for a women and other times it’s an emotional issue.  Either way, there is help for her.
Sexually Transmitted Disease In Middle Age

You think that you don’t have to worry about pregnancy at some point in time.  Sex should be more fun now that unwanted pregnancy is no longer a problem.  Right?  Pregnancy may not be a problem, but STD is.

I remember as a young nurse in the early 1970s seeing patients come into the doctor’s office where I worked with STDs.  I would give the prescribed injection to the patient and to all the other people they had had sex with.

Guess what?  This generation did not learn their lesson!  This is now the middle aged generation.  Did you know that STD has more than doubled among middle-aged adults and the elderly over the last decade?  Remember, this is the generation of ‘free love’.  There are several reasons why this is a problem with the middle age group.  I will not go into all the reasons in this article.

Recently one of my friends told me about a talk she had with an older woman.  This woman is going on a cruise and she is hoping to find a man to connect with in more ways than others, if you know what I mean.  My friend, had to have ‘the talk’ with this older woman about protecting herself from contracting a STD.  My friend had to talk to this older woman about being prepared by having some lubrication with her as well. The shoe’s on the other foot as a 60+ year old woman is lecturing a woman in her late 70s.  Never thought I would be hearing about a conversation like this one.

Statics on STD Among Seniors

According to the CDC, close to 2,550 cases of syphilis were reported among adults between the ages of 45 and 65 in 2010 — up from around 900 cases in 2000.

And the number of reported chlamydia cases in the age group almost tripled, from around 6,700 in 2000 to 19,600 a decade later.

Having second thoughts about sleeping around?  You should.  You still have to protect yourself.

Women are more understanding than you give them credit for.  If the woman you’re with doesn’t understand and support you, then she’s superficial and you don’t need that!

Third Eye Sixth Charka by Janet Lynas, Ph.D., N.H.D.

The sixth chakra, Ajna, is in the area of the third eye, which is found in the space between the eyebrows. The third eye charka includes the pituitary gland, eyes, head, and lower part of the brain.  Even though it’s invisible its a powerful connection to your center of intuition. It’s a spiritual chakra, which means “beyond wisdom.” Ajna leads you to an inner knowledge that will guide you when you let it. An open sixth chakra can enable clairvoyance, telepathy, lucid dreaming, expanded imagination, and visualization.

Do I have a third eye?

The phone rings and somehow before you answer it, you already know who is calling?  Mothers and fathers sense that there is something wrong with their child.  They go to check on the child only to discover the child is lying listless in bed with a fever.  You sense something is wrong, but you can’t quite put your finger on what the danger is until you come to an intersection and you see a car run a red light.

The energy of this chakra allows us to experience clear thought as well as gifts of spiritual contemplation and self reflection.

The sixth chakra is holistic in nature. When fully activated, both hemispheres of the brain function in harmony. The right hemisphere’s creativity and synthetic thinking is integrated and balanced with the left hemisphere’s logical and analytical thinking.

What happens when the sixth charka is blocked?

Signs of Deficiency in the Sixth Chakra

  • Being insensitive to situations and others
  • Poor vision, not able to see the future or image alternatives
  • Difficulty visualizing
  • Lack of imagination
  • Poor memory
  • Denial(unable to see what is happening)
  • Rigid thinking, one way is the only way
  • Inability to remember dreams

Signs of Excess in the Sixth Chakra

  • Hallucinations
  • Obsessions
  • Delusions
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Nightmares
How To Balance Your Third Eye

Meditation is beneficial in opening a blocked sixth charka.  Through meditation you are able to focus on the intuitive center to bring it back into balance.  Focus on your breathing to ease yourself into a relaxed state.

Open yourself up to new ideas.  Be receptive to the thoughts that come to mind during meditation.  This wisdom can give you insight in balancing your body in every area.

Go outside, the third eye is influenced by light.  The sunlight and moonlight both can help to activate the third eye and get the energy flowing again.

Move your body.  Movement allows the energy to flow throughout your body.  Movement through dance, yoga, walking to name a few examples stimulates the blood flow and production of some hormones.

Positive affirmations such as:

  • I am in touch with my inner feelings
  • I am wise
  • I am in touch with the world around me

Essential Oils can open the third eye.  Scent can trigger creative energy or recall memories.

Our sixth charka of intuition is essential in helping navigate through life.  Our ‘third eye’ helps us to see beyond the tangible world into universal understanding.  It teaches us spiritual truths and understanding.

Note if you are having symptoms that are out of the ordinary for you such as: severe headache that will not be relieved with standard treatments, seizures, difficulty with vision, hallucinations, or delusions contact your doctor to make sure that there is not an underlying organic problem associated with your symptoms.

The Fifth Chakra Throat Center by Janet Lynas, Ph.D., N.H.D.

The Throat Chakra is the fifth chakra.  It is the first of the higher or spiritual chakras. This chakra is located at the throat in the region of the neck and shoulders and its color is blue.  The fifth chakra or throat chakra is the center where we speak our truth. From this chakra you seek knowledge that is true. This knowledge goes beyond the limitations of time and space, beyond cultural and family conditioning. We are able to listen more closely from our throat charka. This is one of the qualities that comes with “speaking our truth”.

Problems of a blocked Throat Charka

When the throat charka is blocked, one feels that they are not able to express their truth. Also,  when you feel your ability to communicate effectively is impaired you feel fearful of ridicule and judgement. A throat chakra blockage can also manifest as the inability to express and realize your truth in the world. One may feel unable to speak your truth when you need to speak it the most. Or you may be holding back on expressing your needs and desires.  Do you know a closed throat chakra can also cause hoarseness, neck pain and thyroid problems?

Clearing your throat charka

Some steps you can take to clear your throat charka include:

  1. Say no to people when appropriate
  2. Start a conversation with someone and have the focus on that person
  3. Let your feelings be known to those you feel are trying to take advantage of you
  4. Sing, hum, yell if you need to
  5. Surround yourself with the color blue
  6. Drink more water or herbal tea
  7. Learn better listening skills
  8. Keep a journal of your feelings and what’s going on in your life
  9. Reconnect with nature by taking a walk in nature
  10. Meditation can help release negative feelings of anxiety and fear

I recently did hypnosis on an individual and afterwards we talked about her throat chakra being blocked. I explained to my client that the hoarseness she was having was coming from a blocked throat chakra. While she was speaking her truth, she did not feel that her words were being heard.

A week later, she contacted me and told me about a conversation she had with a friend. She told the friend about not feeling like she was being heard. Once she expressed her feelings, her voice suddenly changed and the hoarseness clear up instantly.  She told me the friend she was having the conversation with at the time asked, “What just happened? Your voice changed instantly!”

The truth will be known

Make sure that you speak your truth at all times.  You can speak your truth in a kind and loving way and still get your point across.  It is important to not only speak your truth but to feel like you’re being heard as well.
